The Shitty Dev

About

The Shitty Dev collects true stories from working in IT: programming, networks, servers, systems and clients. What goes wrong, often because of us, told by people who have been there.

Why it exists

People who work in IT carry an archive of disasters that never stops growing: scripts named with a single letter, servers shut down the wrong way, client requests nobody can decipher. These stories usually get told over dinner and then forgotten. Here we write them down, because they are funny and because each one has something to teach.

What you will find

  • Technical stories sorted by category and by tag.
  • Two indexes on every story. Severity tells you how badly it went, from 1 to 5. Dumbness tells you how absurd it was, also from 1 to 5, because some stories are simply unbelievable. Every level has its own name, and the ranking sorts the stories by either one.
  • Two languages. Every story starts in Italian on ilprogrammatoredimerda.it, and the English version is on theshittydev.com.

Anonymity

We never write the names of people, companies or clients, and we leave out details that could identify them. That is also why the stories are told in the third person: the characters are "an IT guy", "a colleague", "a client". If you recognise a story, it has probably happened to you too.
